My work is primarily 2D, mostly oil paintings but also drawings and intaglio prints.
I see art as an exploration of the gap between what we see and how we experience what we see. My work is often layered the layers applied sometimes months apart, reflecting the constantly fluid relationships we have to objects, persons and places.

Although anything may be a starting point – a mark, a colour, a passing thought, a response to an object or landscape, there are themes which frequently appear which refer to the passage of time. The time to make a work might take many months but sometimes the work is more spontaneously arrived at. I am an undisciplined traveller. I can easily be distracted. I find it unhelpful to draw rigid distinctions between abstract and figurative work. Sometimes the external referent to a piece of my work is easily identified at other times it isn’t. Often from seemingly random beginnings the process develops. Play is both a process and an objective. It is an exploration of possibilities. An exploration that offers intrinsic satisfaction while allowing time, space and a different means by which to reflect on other areas of life. |
